What is Spyware?

Over the last few years, some software companies have started putting code into their software to track users and spy on their computer usage and internet habits, to use this information for their own gain and without the unsuspecting victims knowledge!

Most companies do not do this, but there are more unscrupulous software developers using this technique than most people realise. Sometimes you don’t even need to download the software to get infected with the spyware. Web site operators can (and often do) use commonly exploited security bugs in internet explorer to make your computer download the spyware and run it on your PC not just without your permission, but without you even knowing it has happened.

How Can I tell if I have Spyware on my computer?

Not all symptoms are easy to spot or obvious, but some of the more easily recognised symptoms include: -

• Your computer slowing down to a crawl
• Porn, Pay Per Click Search or Freebie sites popping up in your browser when you are surfing the net or when you first open your internet browser
• Your computer mysteriously dials up phone numbers during the middle of the night, normally to expensive porn chat lines leaving you with a massive bill to pay and wondering what happened. You might not even realise this is happening until it is too late!!!
• When you enter a search into your search bar, a new and unfamiliar site handles the search (this is a "pay per click" search site and the owner will make money on every search you do on the site)
• New sites are added to your favourites list without you adding them, and you may have extreme problems getting rid of them..
• Your homepage has been hijacked and even though you remove the new site it keeps coming back when you reboot your computer. This can be a nightmare, it happened to me several times before I got XoftSpy and it can be VERY difficult to remove this kind of spyware!
• You get pop up adverts that address you by your name, even when your computer isn’t connected to the internet. When this first happened to me I was a bit freaked out! Hence my search for a spyware removal system to stop it happening again...
